Lack of Footpath Gritting a Safety Concern

People Before Profit Galway have criticised the lack of footpath and cycleway gritting across the city as a prolonged cold snap has gripped Galway.

Local representative Adrian Curran described the situation as “an accident waiting to happen.”
“The cold weather didn’t come as a surprise. The city council had adequate time to plan for winter weather and then to roll out a salt and gritting procedure to accommodate all those who live in Galway city. I am aware of a number of slips and falls already – thankfully, no serious injuries have occurred yet – but that yet is the part I am most concerned about”

Curran continued, “The prioritisation of roadway gritting over footpaths and cycleways showcases Galway City Councils favouritism of private vehicles over sustainable, cleaner transport options like walking, cycling, and public transport. For meeting our carbon targets, reducing air pollution, and reducing reliance on private vehicles, people must be assured that they will be able to use active transport options safely at all times of the year.”

Proposing what is to be done, Curran stated, “Winter shouldn’t come as a surprise to those in the local authority. We need to significantly upgrade our gritting infrastructure and at the very least provide equal salting and gritting for footpaths, cycleways, bus stops, and roads. People of all ages and ability need to feel safe and comfortable navigating the city throughout the winter period.”
