Warmest Year on Irish Record

Ireland’s warmest year on record cause for concern, claims People Before Profit representative for Galway, Adrian Curran.
This comes as Met Éireann have released their annual climate statement for 2022.
The report notes the rising temperature in Ireland, multiple heatwaves, new minimum and maximum records, record wet months, and more.
“Ireland is not immune from the impacts of climate change,” says Curran. “Whilst our emissions are comparatively low compared to larger countries, we produce an enormous number of emissions per capita. Every country needs to play its part in addressing climate change.
“2022 has been an example of just some of that change,” continued Curran. “For people born before 2022 it will be one of the hottest years ever experienced. However, for those born in or after 2022, it will remain one of the coldest.”
In terms of offering solutions, Curran stated, “The solutions are known to us all. We have to leave fossil fuels in the ground. There is no wiggle room there. We need to ensure all homes are retrofitted, beginning with those living in social housing and fuel poverty. We need to see a move away from the over-reliance on private cars for travel, we need free and frequent public transport, and we rapidly need to increase not just our wind and solar potential, but our energy storage options too.”
