New Galway Traffic Data
Galway’s traffic problem is robbing people of time, money, and their health, according to People Before Profit Galway representative Adrian Curran.
The 2022 Global Traffic Scorecard released by INRIX shows that:
1. Galway commuters spend on average 94 hours per year commuting
2. Galway is the 7th most congested city in Europe
3. Galway has lowest reduction in traffic since 2019 at -13%, compared to Cork, Dublin and Limerick at -20%, -26%, and -29% respectively.
4. Galway ranked 39th worst congested city out of 991 surveyed
“Galway’s traffic woes are not news to anyone who has spent time in the city,” claims Curran.
“Unfortunately, there seems to be little sign of things changing in Galway. We have inadequate cycling, walking, and accessible infrastructure, forcing people to rely on their cars even for relatively short journeys.”
Curran continued, “With the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, spending on fuel is a burden many people are struggling to cope with. It’s also important to note the significant impact private vehicles have on not just our local air quality, but our carbon emissions too.”
On what options are out there, Curran stated, “What Galway needs is a sincere investment in public transport and active travel options. Walking, cycling, buses all need to come ahead of private cars.
As we’ve seen, the city council has significantly underspent on its active transport budget. There is money there to address Galway’s traffic and car dependency. We now need those in local government with the political will.”
