PBP Galway Criticises Uber launch in Galway

People Before Profit have criticised the news that Uber has launched in Galway city, making it the third city outside Dublin where to service can be found.

Speaking on why this is bad news, local representative Adrian Curran said, “Uber offers little to no benefit to Galway. Those who drive for Uber are not employees – they are not afforded the same workers rights as others such as sick leave and holiday pay. They are also tasked with using their own vehicles, leading to further use and depreciation.”

Curran continued, “Uber relies on undercutting the current market, undermining public transport and taxi services, at the expense of their drivers. People driving for Uber should be recognised as employees, not independent contractors. More cars on the road will also lead to greater pollution and congestion – two things Galway does not need more of.

On what options are out there, Curran stated, “What Galway needs is a sincere investment in public transport and active travel options. Walking, cycling, buses all need to come ahead of private cars.
As we’ve seen, the city council has significantly underspent on its active transport budget. There is money there to address Galway’s traffic and car dependency. We would also welcome a renewed feasibility study into the Galway Light Rail system.”
